Our Philosophy: How We Raise Our Animals

How We Raise Our Animals

Our farm is built on a simple belief: animals deserve a good life. To us, that looks like access to pasture, fresh air, and the freedom to move and behave naturally. We raise our animals with care, patience, and respect — not because it’s trendy, but because it’s the right thing to do.

Every decision we make, from how our animals are fed to how our land is managed, is guided by animal welfare and long-term sustainability. We focus on low-stress handling, clean living conditions, and pasture-based systems that support both animal health and soil health.

We know our customers care deeply about where their food comes from, and we believe transparency matters. We’re proud of how we farm, and we’re always happy to share what that looks like — because trust is just as important as the food itself.

Pasture Raised | Rengenerative & Sustainable | Low-Stress | Grass Fed | Grain Finished

At Cooper’s CSA Farm, each animal is raised with care, respect, and attention to their individual needs. While every species is different, our approach stays the same: low-stress handling, outdoor access, and farming practices that prioritize animal welfare and food quality.

Below, you’ll find more detail about how each of our animals is raised and what you can expect when choosing food from our farm.

Beef Cows: Cow/Calf Herd & Feeder/Stocker Cattle

FACTS:

  • Breed: Red & Black Angus crossed with Limousin.

  • Diet: Grass Fed-Grain Finished

    • Grass Fed: From our summer pastures that have specific grass varieties to support the cattle, & our soil type. In winter, cattle are fed hay bales & silage that were grown and harvested on our farm for winter storage. (Drought years can affect whether we need to buy in winter hay.)

    • Grain Finished: We do not want 100% lean cattle- fat is where all of the flavour comes from, and we want a nice marble. Our feeder/stocker cattle that go into our meat sales get a 10% ration of corn and brewers’ grain to aid in getting a good amount of marbling into each cut.

  • Grazing Method:

    • Rotational strip grazing on pasture in summer—this is amazing for our pasture regeneration, soil and herd health. In winter, cattle are kept on a wintering paddock for health and safety during the harsher months.
