Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is not a new idea, but one that has gained popularity in Canada within recent years. Instead of purchasing at a supermarket, CSA Members sign-up to either pick-up or have delivered, weekly baskets of vegetables and fruit, free-range eggs, or meat such as free-range chicken, hormone and antibiotic free Angus-grade beef, or pasture-fed goat, lamb or pork. This allows the farmer to ensure the quality and quantity of his produce, while providing the member with only the ripest and most seasonal produce.
Consumer demand for locally produced, high quality, sustainably managed food has driven the evolution of CSA’s. When you join, you are not just buying vegetables; you are supporting sustainable farming practices, and contributing to a reliable, healthy, local food supply that provides decent return for farmers.
